Abstract:

Kapil Muni Ashram, situated at Gangasagar in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, occupies a unique place in the religious and intellectual landscape of India. Traditionally associated with Sage Kapila—the legendary founder of the Sāṁkhya system of Indian philosophy—the ashram represents a convergence of mythology, philosophy, sacred geography, and popular religious practice. This research article undertakes a comprehensive study of Kapil Muni Ashram by examining its mythological origins, historical development, philosophical foundations, ritual practices, socio-cultural role, and contemporary challenges. Using qualitative methodology based on textual analysis of scriptures, philosophical treatises, historical accounts, and secondary scholarly works, the paper argues that Kapil Muni Ashram functions not only as a pilgrimage center but also as a living symbol of India’s civilizational continuity, where metaphysical ideas and collective faith are embedded in a specific geographical space.
