Abstract:

From the time immemorial library and information services are a leading element in libraries. With the advent of digital era, the role and function of a library has been changed. New invention, new technology transformed it to a digital library and the librarian has become a digital librarian. The use of libraries in the present era has been changed owing to the rising popularity of digital archives, web based content creation and E-media. Now the library needs to become the need of the modern age. As a digital custodian, a librarian is responsible for educating users about the use of digital library services and provides them with a general digital literacy. Though a librarian faces a number of challenges in this digital age yet this role as a digital custodian is indispensable. As the information technologies are changing day by day and growing at an enormous speed, the knowledge society is becoming more and more complex and competitive. Web based learning and teaching environment has influenced the library and information services in academic libraries and provided new opportunities and challenges to the library professional for the involvement in the internet based information services, web based digital resources etc. academic libraries must become digital in order to keep pace with the modern world of E-technology and commerce.
