India is a multicultural country, where women are revered as mothers and goddesses, an integral part of Indian culture. Ancient Indian scriptures, such as the Rigveda, Atharvaveda, Mahabharata, and Ramayana, depict the character of women as a shining star. Kautilya’s ‘Arthashastra’ sheds light on the status of women in ancient India, carrying a message of light on the subject of women worldwide. From this book, we can learn about the status of women in ancient India and analyze their position from ancient to modern times. The way Kautilya’s time describes the status of women, it is known that importance was given to women’s political development, education, socio-social status, self-reliance, women’s wealth, and empowerment. In the present time, all these aspects of women have reached a more advanced and progressive stage. Kautilya’s Arthashastra is gaining more relevance in the present time than in the past. Comparing it with the present time, it is seen that women of the past were much behind the women of the present time. In the present time, women are more independent and are able to claim their rights themselves. Through education, they are participating in politics and are self-governed in their social, political, economic, and other aspects. They have achieved sovereign power and have brought themselves to a stage where they are quite prosperous. Through this research, we see that the discussion about the status of women in Kautilya’s Arthashastra is still relevant in the present time. Education, self-reliance, and empowerment are extremely important for the development of women.
