Abstract:
Background: Pranayama, the yogic art of breath regulation, has been revered for millennia as a core discipline for harmonizing body, mind, and consciousness. In classical yoga, it is positioned as the fourth limb of Patanjali’s Ashtanga Yoga, a bridge between physical practice and meditation. Among modern expositions, B.K.S. Iyengar’s Light on Pranayama remains unparalleled for its precision, depth, and holistic vision. Purpose: This narrative review explores Iyengar’s systematic treatment of pranayama, analyzing its philosophical foundations, anatomical and physiological insights, specific breathing techniques, and purported health benefits. Additionally, it examines how Iyengar’s teachings resonate with modern scientific findings in respiratory physiology, neuroscience, and integrative medicine. Methods: A narrative textual analysis of B.K.S. Iyengar’s Light on Pranayama (2008 edition) was conducted. Core concepts, methodological guidelines, and reported benefits were extracted and synthesized. To contextualize Iyengar’s insights, selective secondary literature and peer-reviewed studies (2010–2024) were reviewed. No systematic database search was performed; rather, emphasis was placed on bridging classical wisdom and contemporary science. Results: Iyengar defines prana as the universal life force, manifesting through five vital airs (prana-vayus), and pranayama as its conscious regulation via inhalation (puraka), exhalation (rechaka), and retention (kumbhaka). He elaborates detailed techniques such as Ujjayi, Viloma, Nadi Sodhana, Bhastrika, Sitali, and Bhramari, supplemented by essential locks (bandhas) and gestures (mudras). Reported benefits include enhanced lung capacity, balanced autonomic function, purification of nadis (energy channels), emotional stability, and spiritual clarity. Recent scientific studies corroborate these claims, demonstrating pranayama’s effects on vagal tone, heart rate variability, stress reduction, and mental health. Conclusion: Iyengar’s Light on Pranayama integrates rigorous detail with profound philosophical insight, presenting pranayama as a transformative discipline with multidimensional benefits. Its alignment with modern evidence underscores its contemporary relevance. Future research should employ randomized controlled trials, neuroimaging, and cross-cultural studies to validate Iyengar’s claims and expand pranayama’s role in global health promotion.
