Mind-Body Discipline, Meditative Absorption (Naam Dhyana), And Martial Fortitude In The Philosophy Of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji: A Systematic Review

Author(s): Dr. Gurneet Kaur

Abstract:

Background: Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, introduced a transformative paradigm synthesizing profound meditative absorption (Naam Simran/Dhyana) with dynamic martial prowess (Shastar Vidya), culminating in the ideal of the Sant-Sipahi (Saint-Soldier). While traditional Yogic paths often prioritized monastic asceticism (Sannyasa) and static meditation, the Gurmat framework operationalized meditative focus within active, worldly righteousness (Karma Yoga). Objective: To systematically review and synthesize existing literature on how the philosophical, compositional, and physical disciplines instituted by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji map onto classical Yogic mechanics, neurobiological stress resilience, and psychophysiological health. Methods: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, comprehensive searches were conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, JSTOR, and specialized Sikh Research Repositories for studies published between 2000 and 2026. Studies were screened based on pre-defined PICO criteria. Methodological quality was evaluated using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) and JBI Critical Appraisal Checklists. Results: A total of 18 studies met the final inclusion criteria (10 qualitative/philosophical studies, 5 physiological/biomechanical studies, and 3 psychological resilience studies). Synthesis reveals three key dimensions: (1) Rhythmic sound resonance (Nadam) in primary compositions such as Jaap Sahib creates neural entrainment and cognitive focus; (2) Combined meditative and physical conditioning significantly improves autonomic regulation, increasing Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and modulating HPA-axis cortisol response; (3) The Sant-Sipahi synthesis provides an active mindfulness framework that bridges static Raja Yoga focus with dynamic daily execution. Conclusion: The teachings and practices established by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji offer an integrated mind-body model that enhances both internal psychological stability and external physical resilience, providing valuable applications for contemporary stress management, executive leadership, and trauma recovery.
