Musical Traditions in the Samaveda: Exploring Chanting Techniques and Their Cultural Impact

Author(s): Dr. Krishna Panda

Abstract:

The Samaveda, one of the four canonical Vedas, stands as a cornerstone of Indian musical heritage. Unlike the Rigveda, which preserves the poetic hymns, the Samaveda emphasizes melodic rendering, transforming textual content into structured musical forms known as Sāmagaṇa. This paper delves into the chanting techniques of the Samaveda, analyzes their notational system, examines their transmission through oral tradition, and explores their impact on classical Indian music and broader cultural practices. Combining philological, musicological, and anthropological approaches, this study sheds light on how ancient chanting methods not only shaped ritualistic spirituality but also laid the foundations for India's musical legacy.
