Online Learning and Student Engagement: Analyzing the Effectiveness of Virtual Classrooms

Author(s): Carla Souza Mendes

Abstract:

The transition to online learning has revolutionized education, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, one of the major concerns surrounding virtual learning environments is their ability to maintain student engagement. This research aims to assess the effectiveness of online learning by analyzing student engagement through various metrics. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing surveys, interviews, and data analytics from learning management systems (LMS) to compare engagement levels in online and traditional classroom settings. The findings reveal that while online learning offers flexibility and accessibility, it often results in lower engagement levels compared to traditional face-to-face instruction. Key factors influencing engagement include instructor presence, interactive elements, and peer collaboration. The study concludes that while online learning can be an effective educational method, its success depends largely on the design of the virtual classroom, the integration of interactive features, and the application of active learning strategies.
