Abstract:
The Siddhāntasundara, written by Jñānarāja around 1500 CE, is a key text in ancient Indian astronomy. This work, meaning "Beautiful Treatise," combines mathematics, cosmology, and philosophy. It has two main parts: one on the structure of the universe and one on calculations for planets and eclipses. Jñānarāja comes from a family of scholars and uses simple yet clever Sanskrit verses to explain complex ideas. He rejects some old views, like a flat Earth, and supports a round Earth with math proofs. The text draws from earlier works but adds new thoughts on time, seasons, and divine order.
